The best colours to paint your bedroom for a peaceful night's sleep

Your bedroom should be a place where you instantly feel relaxed, comfortable and at peace. Getting a good night’s sleep can be largely impacted by the design of our bedrooms, as well as how clean and tidy they are. But colours have the amazing ability to directly impact our moods and emotions, which can also affect our quality of sleep. Therefore, choosing shades for your bedroom that promote calm and positive energy is paramount to sleeping soundly and waking feeling refreshed.

Here, we take a look at the best colours to paint your bedroom for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Blues

Shades of blue promote serenity, calmness and relaxation. Reminiscent of the open sky and the vast oceans, blue has a way of making us feel safe and secure. Lighter shades are perfect for subtle effects, whilst stronger blues may be too energetic to suit a bedroom – sky blue is often the perfect middle ground. According to some studies, sleeping in a blue room results in the best sleep.

The receptors in our eyes are particularly sensitive to the colour blue, and being surrounded by this colour has also been shown to reduce blood pressure and anxiety, making it an excellent choice for a bedroom.

Greens

Natural hues of green, such as sage, makes us feel grounded, safe and peaceful. Using muted shades of green gives a sleepy atmosphere perfect for relaxation and promoting restful sleep. It can make us feel as though we are surrounded by nature, in a tranquil and peaceful environment.

You could incorporate green into your bedroom by the use of house plants, soft furnishings, or by adding painted panels to the bottom half of your walls if you didn’t want to paint the entire room green

Pink

Pale shades of pink represent a sweet innocence and are very calming. It’s subtle enough to add some colour to your bedroom without being overbearing or intimidating. The sweetness of soft pink shades aids relaxation and provides a comforting feeling. Be sure to avoid bold pinks, and opt instead for dusky or blush tones.

Although it can be considered feminine, subtle pink bedrooms can be given a unisex feeling by adding earthy accents of deep browns or neutrals. Adding black furnishings gives a pale pink room a chic, edgy vibe that will still promote a good night’s sleep.

Neutrals

Whilst white promotes feelings of cleanliness and purity and gives the illusion of space, off-white shades or warmer neutral tones add a warm and cosy feel to a bedroom. Any of the previously mentioned colours work brilliantly when paired with a neutral shade, so be sure to get creative and mix the colours however you see fit. Try to keep colour theory in mind to create a harmonious space that isn’t overwhelming to your senses, and you’ll be resting deeply in no time.
